This week Steve Bradley, Randy Johovich, Marlin Klingensmith continue a series on Sin.

This is Steve’s first time on Milligantown Theological Society. Steve is the teaching elder (pastor) at Trinity Reformed Presbyterian Church in Beltsville Maryland. It was great to have Steve with us for the discussion, and we hope he can be with us on a regular basis.

Question 10

Q. Will God permit such disobedience and rebellion to go unpunished?

A. Certainly not. He is terribly angry about the sin we are born with as well as the sins we personally commit.

As a just judge he punishes them now and in eternity.

He has declared: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.

Numbers 20:2-13

1. hamartano

Negation of meros -to get. Therefore it means to not get a portion of. Miss the mark. Miss, sin, offend, trespass.

1 John 1:8-9

8 If we say we have no sin[hamartian], we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins [hamartias], he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins [hamartias] and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

2. paraptoma

para – along side + ptoma – fall.

Fall alongside. A side slip, lapse, or deviation. Unintentional error or willful transgression; fall, fault, offense, sin, trespass.

Ephesians 2:1

And you were dead in the trespasses [paraptoma] and sins [hamartiais]…

3. ptaeo

Offend, stumble, to trip, err, sin, fail, fall

James 3:2

For we all stumble [ptaiomen] in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble [ptaiei] in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.

4. skandalizo

From skandalon — stumbling block

To entrap, trip up, entice to sin, apostasy or displeasure. To offend.

Matthew 5:29-30

29 If your right eye causes you to sin [skandalizei], tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin [skandalizei], cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

5. parabaino

Para — alongside + baino — go

To go contrary; to violate a command; transgress, deviate. Purposefully breaking the law.

Matthew 15:2

1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do your disciples break [parabainousi] the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.”

James 2:11

For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor [parabatas] of the law.

6. parakouw

Para — alongside + akouo — hear

Misshear, neglect to hear, disobey.

Hebrews 2:1-2

1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard [akoustheisi], lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable and every transgression [parabasis] or disobedience [parakoei] received a just retribution….

Romans 5:19

For as by the one man’s disobedience [parakoeis] the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience [hupakoeis] the many will be made righteous.

7. apeitheis

A — negation + peitho — obey or be persuaded

Unpersuadable, contumatious, stubornly perverse, rebellious, obstinately disobedient.

Acts 26:19

Therefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient [apeitheis] to the heavenly vision….

Ephesians 2:1-2

1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience [apeitheias]….

Ephesians 5:6

7. opheilo

To owe in pecuniary; to be under obligation; to fail in duty; be bound, due; be guilty of; indebted to.

Luke 16:5

So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe [opheileis] my master?’

Matthew 6:12

…and forgive us our debts [opheilemata], as we also have forgiven our debtors [opheiletais].

Genesis 39:7-9

Genesis 4:1-7

1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. 2. shagah (shaw-gaw)

Strongs 7686: to stray (mislead) usually (figuratively) to mistake, especially (morally) to transgress; by extension (through the idea of intoxication) to reel (figuratively) be enraptured: — (cause to) go astray, deceive, err, be ravished, sin through ignorance, (let, make to) wander.

Leviticus 4:13-14

13 “If the whole congregation of Israel sins [shagah] unintentionally and the thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they do any one of the things that by the LORD’s commandments ought not to be done, and they realize their guilt, 14 when the sin [chatta’ah] which they have committed becomes known, the assembly shall offer a bull from the herd for a sin offering and bring it in front of the tent of meeting.

Proverbs 5:19

18 Let your fountain be blessed,

3. ‘avah (aw-vah)

Strongs 5753: to crook, literally or figuratively: do amiss, bow down, make crooked, commit iniquity, pervert, do perversely, trouble, turn, do wickedly, do wrong.

2 Samuel 7:14-15

14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity [avah], I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.

4. rasha (raw-shaw)

Strongs 7561: To Be wrong; by implication, to disturb, violate: condemn, make trouble, do wickedly.

Deuteronomy 25:1

If there is a dispute between men and they come into court and the judges decide between them, acquitting the innocent and condemning [rasha] the guilty…

Psalm 18:21

For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed [rasha] from my God.

5. marad (maw-rad)

Strongs 4775: To rebel. To revolt against a human king or against God.

Genesis 14:4

Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled [marad].

Daniel 9:4-5

4 I prayed to the LORD my God and made confession, saying, “O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5 we have sinned [chata] and done wrong [avah] and acted wickedly [rasha] and rebelled [marad], turning aside [avah] from your commandments and rules.

Romans 6:1-14

1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Charles Finney in Lectures to Professing Christians

Finney here shows that he thinks of Old Testament as Law and New Testament as Gospel.

I am to show that Christian Perfection is a duty.

1. This is evident from the fact that God requires it, both under the law and under the gospel.

The command in the text, “Be ye perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect,” [Matthew 5:48] is given under the gospel.

Isaiah 55:1-7

1 “Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
3 Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.

Galiatians 3:19-25

19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.

21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian….

Romans 5:20-21

20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 7:7-12

7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

Romans 13:1-7

1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

John 14:21

Romans 5:12-21

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned– 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Louis Berkhof in Systematic Theology

With respect to the origin of sin in the history of mankind, the Bible teaches that it began with the transgression of Adam in paradise, and therefore with a perfectly voluntary act on the part of man. The tempter came from the spirit world with the suggestion that man, by placing himself in opposition to God, might become like God. Adam yielded to the temptation and committed the first sin by eating of the forbidden fruit. But the matter did not stop there, for by that first sin Adam became the bond-servant of sin. That sin carried permanent pollution with it, and a pollution which, because of the solidarity of the human race, would affect not only Adam but all his descendants as well. As a result of the fall the father of the race could only pass on a depraved human nature to his offspring. From that unholy source sin flows on as an impure stream to all the generations of men, polluting everyone and everything with which it comes in contact. It is exactly this state of things that made the question of Job so pertinent, ‘Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.’ Job 14:4. But even this is not all. Adam sinned not only as the father of the human race, but also as the representative head of all his descendants; and therefore the guilt of his sin is placed to their account, so that they are all liable to the punishment of death. It is primarily in that sense that Adam’s sin is the sin of all. That is what Paul teaches us in Rom. 5:12: ‘Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin; and so death passed unto all men, for that all sinned.’ The last words can only mean that they all sinned in Adam, and sinned in such a way as to make them all liable to the punishment of death. It is not considered merely as pollution, but sin as guilt that carries punishment with it. God adjudges all men to be guilty sinners in Adam, just as He adjudges all believers to be righteous in Jesus Christ. That is what Paul means, when he says: ‘So then as through one trespass the judgment came until all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness the free gift came unto all men to justification of life. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one shall the many be made righteous,’ Rom. 5:18,19

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death.

Isaiah 64:6-7

6 We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
7 There is no one who calls upon your name,
who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.

Romans 1:29-31

29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Romans 7:13-25

13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

Q.6. Did God create people so wicked and perverse?

Q.7. Then where does this corrupt human nature come from?

Definition of “Hell”

Modern theology tends rather to stress the fact that hell is but the logical consequence of ultimate adherence to the soul’s own will and rejection of the will of God,which (since God cannot take away free will) necessarily separates the soul from God, and hence from all possibility of happiness.
